Als officieel parallel evenement van de 14e Biënnale van Istanbul, werden gasten van het Nederlandse Consulaat uitgenodigd om getuige te zijn van een avond vullend site-specifiek, historisch geïnspireerde optreden. Dit is onderdeel van het initiatief van het Nederlandse Consulaat's om Nederlandse kunstenaars aan een internationaal publiek voor te stellen - in lijn met het beleid om de kloof tussen Nederland en Turkije te overbruggen en een culturele uitwisseling te stimuleren.  De avond werd aangevuld met een 'pool-side' receptie. 

 

Tijdens de voorstelling Of Kings & Consuls, neemt kunstenaar Marieke Warmelink de rol aan van de nieuwe vertegenwoordiger van Nederland. Door een combinatie van live art en performance, verwelkomde Warmelink haar Turks Nederlandse publiek in de kapel waar ze een presentatie geeft  met behulp van verschillende vormen van media, theater, film en animatie. In deze voorstelling komen verschillende facetten van haar leiderschap aan bod, bied zij excuses aan voor het stelen van de Turkse Tulp en bied een alternatief aan; een animatie speciaal gemaakt voor de MATRA afdeling van het consulaat (afdeling voor mensenrechten). Warmelink betrekt het publiek bij het werk om de huidige rol van de toeschouwer uit te dagen. Het werk reflecteert op het publieke domein op zowel de historische en actuele zaken - de Biënnale van Istanbul was een ideale gelegenheid om met veel mensen en culturen samen te komen.

As an official parallel event to the 14th Istanbul Biennial, guests are invited to witness an evening of site-specific, historically inspired performances as part of the Dutch Consulate’s initiative of bringing Dutch artists to an international audience - in line with the consulate’s policy of bridging the gap between The Netherlands and Turkey whilst facilitating cultural exchange amongst viewers and taste-makers alike. The evening will be complimented with a 'pool-side' reception.
 
Of Kings & Consuls, by Dutch artist Marieke Warmelink, aims at engaging audiences with performances, crossing-over various disciplines such as, architecture, theatre and music at the Chapel of the Dutch Consulate. Warmelink involves her audience in the process through collaborative methods, applying interdisciplinary strategies to challenge the current role of the spectator. The work reflects on the public domain, responding to both historic and current affairs - making the Istanbul Biennial an ideal time in which to connect with many people and cultures at an event of cultural celebration. 
Marieke Warmelink takes on the role of the new representative of The Netherlands for her performance at the Consulate. Through a combination of live art and performance, Warmelink welcomes her audience to the chapel where she will present her work using various forms of media, implementing elements of theatre, film and animation.
